Induction cooking in Colorado, cost, panel impact and rebates

Is switching from a gas stove to induction worth it in Colorado? Efficiency, the electrical work involved, 120-volt options and which rebates exist in 2026.

Short answer: induction is usually the last gas appliance Coloradans replace, and that's reasonable. The stove is a small share of most homes' gas use, so the switch is more about cooking, indoor air and getting off gas entirely than about saving money. If your range already has a 240-volt circuit nearby, induction is an easy swap. If it doesn't, the electrical work is the real cost. Rebates exist in some parts of Colorado but not in Xcel territory.

How induction works, and why it's efficient

An induction cooktop uses an electromagnetic coil under the glass to heat the pan directly. The glass itself only gets warm from contact with the pan. ENERGY STAR's emerging technology award put induction at about 85% efficient at getting energy into the pan, compared with about 75% to 80% for standard electric resistance and about 32% for gas. ENERGY STAR describes that as about three times more efficient than gas.

In practice, people notice:

  • Water boils fast.
  • Low settings hold steady for sauces and simmering.
  • The surface around the pan stays cooler, which helps with kids and spills.
  • No combustion in the kitchen.

At altitude

Water boils at a lower temperature at Colorado elevations than at sea level. That's physics, not the stove, and it affects gas and induction equally. Induction's fast response makes it easier to hold a precise simmer, but altitude adjustments to recipes still apply.

What it costs

There are two parts:

  1. The appliance. Induction cooktops and ranges sell across a wide price spread. Battery-equipped 120-volt ranges sit at the high end; Copper's Charlie range, for example, was listed at $6,799 when we checked.
  2. The electrical work. This is where costs vary most:
    • If a 240-volt range circuit already exists (a previous electric range), the swap may need nothing more than the appliance.
    • If the kitchen only has a 120-volt outlet behind a gas range, an electrician needs to run a new 240-volt circuit, sized to what the range's installation manual specifies, from the panel. Cost depends on distance, wall and floor access, and whether the panel has room.
    • A plumber or gas fitter caps the gas line.

We don't publish installed price ranges until we have Colorado job data to back them. Get a quote that separates the appliance, electrical and gas cap.

Panel impact

An induction range is a large electrical load on paper, but it rarely runs at full power for long. Whether your panel can take it is a load calculation question; see do I need a bigger panel. If your panel is tight and you're also adding a heat pump or EV charger, consider:

  • A 120-volt battery-assisted range. Copper says its Charlie range runs on 120 volts at 11.9 amps and ships with a standard plug. It uses a built-in battery to supply peak power.
  • A smaller induction cooktop on a lower-amperage circuit, if it suits how you cook.
  • Load management that coordinates the range with other big loads.

Rebates in 2026

ProgramInduction rebate
Holy Cross Energy$500 per unit ($1,000 income-qualified)
Black Hills Energy (electric)$987 for an induction range, preapproval required
Boulder County EnergySmartIncluded in income-qualified rebates, 50% of cost up to $2,000 a year total
Xcel EnergyNone listed in the 2026 Colorado rebate summary
Colorado HEARWas up to $840 for income-qualified households; closed for single-family homes

Some websites claim Xcel added an induction rebate for 2026. We didn't find it in Xcel's own documents. Check with Xcel before counting on one.

Xcel's Whole Home Efficiency program pays a 25% bonus on standard rebates when you complete three or more measures within two years of enrolling. Because Xcel lists no induction rebate, induction itself doesn't add to that bonus.

Pans and practical details

  • Cookware must be magnetic. Test with a fridge magnet on the bottom.
  • Some induction units hum or click at high power with certain pans. It's normal.
  • Ventilation still matters. Cooking makes smoke and grease whether the heat comes from gas or electricity. A range hood vented outside is worth it.

Is it worth it?

On energy cost alone, induction is a small line on a Colorado utility bill either way. The cases where it clearly makes sense:

  • You're already replacing a range.
  • You've electrified heating and water heating, and the stove is the only thing keeping your gas account open. Closing it ends the monthly gas fixed charge. See what happens to your gas bill.
  • You care about combustion byproducts in the kitchen.

If your gas range is working and the rest of the house still uses gas, there's no rush.

Questions people ask

Does Xcel Energy offer an induction rebate in Colorado?

Not that we could find. Xcel's 2026 Colorado rebate summary and home rebates page don't list one. Holy Cross Energy, Black Hills Energy electric and Boulder County's income-qualified program do.

How much more efficient is induction than gas?

ENERGY STAR puts induction at about 85% efficient at transferring energy to the pan, compared with about 32% for gas and 75% to 80% for standard electric resistance.

Do I need a 240-volt circuit for an induction range?

Most full-size induction ranges need one. A few models plug into a standard 120-volt outlet and use a built-in battery to cover high-power cooking; they cost more upfront.

Will my pans work?

Pans need to be magnetic. If a fridge magnet sticks firmly to the bottom, it will work. Cast iron and most stainless steel work; aluminum, copper and glass generally don't unless they have a magnetic base.

Does switching the stove lower my gas bill?

Only a little, if you still use gas for heat or water. The bigger change happens when your last gas appliance goes and you can close the account, ending the monthly fixed charge.
