What a heat pump really costs in Colorado
The installed price depends more on your house than on the equipment. Here is what moves it, what rebates take off, and what you could save to run it.
What it really costs
We are building installed price ranges from completed Colorado jobs, with what each one included. Until that data is ready, this sheet stays empty on purpose. We will not publish a number we cannot trace.
- Cold-climate heat pump
- Heat pump water heater
- Electrical panel, if needed
- After rebates
Meanwhile, the drivers below explain most of the difference between quotes, and the rebate finder shows what comes off the price at your address.
What drives the price
Seven things decide most of the difference between two quotes for the same house. Ask for each as a line item.
- 01
Ducted, ductless or both
A ducted swap uses your existing ducts. Ductless price follows the number of indoor heads, more than the tonnage.
- 02
Size, and how it was chosen
Bigger costs more, but the real question is whether the size came from a load calculation. The state tax credit now requires one.
- 03
Cold-climate equipment
Cold-climate models cost more, and they are the ones that qualify for the larger Xcel and Power Ahead rebates.
- 04
Electrical work
A 240 V circuit is a modest line item. A load management device, smart panel or service upgrade changes the price a lot.
- 05
Ductwork condition
Ducts sized for a furnace sometimes cannot move enough air for a heat pump. Sealing or changes are separate line items.
- 06
Backup heat choice
Keeping the furnace (dual fuel) avoids heat strips but keeps the gas fixed charge. All-electric means sizing electric backup.
- 07
Permits, line sets, pads and access
Permits, line set length, snow stands, condensate handling and hard-to-reach installs all add up.

Read a quote line by line
Ask every contractor for the load calculation, the AHRI number and line items. How to read a quote.
Rebates take a real bite
Programs stack, and their status changes. The rebate finder shows what applies at your address, checked against each program's own pages.
Xcel, Power Ahead, the state tax credit, your city and county.
Amounts depend on your utility, the heat pump’s capacity at 5°F, how you heat now and where you live.
How this works
What this assumes
- We publish installed price ranges only from completed Colorado jobs, by system type and size, with what was included.
- Running-cost savings come from Plenum’s energy savings calculator for your ZIP, floor area and current fuel.
- Rebate amounts live in the rebate finder, which tracks each program’s status and source.
What it cannot tell you
- Savings depend on your electric rate and plan (Xcel’s default is time-of-use), how much backup heat runs, and whether you keep gas.
- Price ranges are not published yet.
